James Pierson has spent more than a decade serving the residents of Coventry with a simple philosophy: government should be accountable to the people it serves, spend taxpayer dollars responsibly, and focus on delivering results.

 

Now, after 12 years on the Coventry School Committee, including serving as chairman, Pierson is seeking election to the Rhode Island Senate to bring that same approach to state government.

 

His campaign is built on the belief that Rhode Island can once again become a place where families can afford to stay, businesses can grow, and young people can build their futures without leaving the state. Inspired by President Ronald Reagan's vision of America as a "shining city upon a hill," Pierson believes Rhode Island has the opportunity to become a beacon of economic opportunity, accountable government, and strong communities once again. That vision is symbolized by the lighthouse featured in his campaign logo, honoring his ancestor, Abel Franklin, the first keeper of the Beavertail Lighthouse, whose determination to guide mariners safely through difficult times reflects the kind of steady leadership Pierson believes Rhode Island needs today.

 

A Record of Proven Leadership

 

As chairman of the Coventry School Committee, Pierson inherited a district facing significant financial challenges. Rather than relying on tax increases or short-term fixes, he helped lead a comprehensive effort to restore the district's financial stability while maintaining a strong focus on student achievement.

 

Under his leadership, the district produced two consecutive budget surpluses totaling nearly $2 million and implemented a deficit reduction plan recognized by the Rhode Island Office of the Auditor General as a model for other school districts. Financial oversight was strengthened, healthcare costs were reduced by approximately $1 million, staffing was responsibly realigned to reflect declining enrollment, and transportation reforms are projected to save taxpayers an additional $400,000 annually.

 

At the same time, the School Committee negotiated employee contracts with the lowest compensation changes in the state, balancing fair pay with the responsibility to protect taxpayers. Academic outcomes also improved, with increased Advanced Placement participation, higher SAT performance, and policies designed to keep classrooms focused on education while strengthening protections for students.

For Pierson, those accomplishments demonstrate that responsible leadership is measured by results and not by rhetoric.

 

A Vision for Rhode Island

 

Pierson's priorities for the Rhode Island Senate are rooted in the same principles that guided his work on the School Committee: fiscal responsibility, transparency, and practical solutions.

 

His campaign focuses on six priorities:

• Lowering energy costs by reforming state policies that have increased utility bills.

• Protecting local zoning and planning control while encouraging responsible growth that respects neighborhoods.

• Supporting excellent schools by eliminating unfunded mandates and allowing educators to focus on student success.

• Protecting our constitutional rights while strengthening law enforcement against violent criminals.

• Growing Rhode Island's economy by reducing unnecessary regulations and strengthening workforce development.

• Making state government more transparent, accountable, and responsive to taxpayers.

 

Pierson believes Rhode Islanders deserve leaders who are willing to make difficult decisions, manage public resources responsibly, and focus on long-term solutions rather than short-term politics.
